Unless you had a specific purpose for your ATV when you bought it, chances are you gave little thought to the tires that came with it. On the other hand, if you bought a used ATV or have owned and used one for quite a while now, then it may be getting to that time when you need a new set of ATV tires.

Now a person has to stop and think about what type of ATV tires they will buy. There are some simple rules to remember when picking your next ATV tires. Buying the wrong set of tires for your four wheeler can have bad results. Like spending a night out in the backwoods alone or paying for costly repairs.

Obviously your budget has to be figured into the mix. Will you be buying new or used atv tires? If you buy used, make sure there is still ample tread left. It would be a real bummer to buy a used set of tires only to find you they’re wore out.

First off, decide what type of riding you do the most. If you’re riding the backwood trails and searching out the muddiest places you can find, then obviously you’re not going to by sand tires. With today’s technology, an ATV owner can easily match tires to his or her type of riding for peak performance.

Sand tires are really nothing more than wide slick ATV tires with paddles on them. Loose sand is not a problem for these wide slick paddled tires. The paddles scoop the sand as the wheel turns, giving excellent traction. These tires are wider than normal and offer good traction in all types of sand terrain, whether it’s the beach or in the middle of the desert. The front tires on a 2 wheel drive ATV will have smooth tires to aid in steering in soft sand.

If you find yourself riding down high mountain trails one weekend and riding over sand dunes the next, then a general purpose tire may be what the doctor ordered. More than likely it’s what came with your new or used atv. Although they do not exceed in any one type of terrain, they do offer the best all around performance for the casual off road ATV rider.

Next come the ATV mud tires. These tires are designed to dig deep into mud for traction while throwing chunks of mud off the tires as it turns – so it can displace more mud. Mud tires are a good choice if most of your riding is done in the wet stuff. While atv mud tires may work well for mud, they’re not exactly the best for sand. You’ll dig youself a nice deep hole quickly if not careful when using a mud terrain tire in sand.

Now we get to the Sport and High Performance ATV Tires. These tires are meant for fast riding on hard surfaces. You’ll also notice that many sport or performance tires have a lower profile and some will have taller and wider wheels. Normally the high performance or Sport ATV tires have smaller X shaped treads as well.

As you can see, just choosing any old set of ATV tires won’t do. Choose wisely and your ATV will give you years of enjoyable riding with just the right amount of performance and value.
